I was at Ink-n-Iron a couple of weeks ago and saw a flier for the first annual So Cal Hellbilly Fest and Car show. I had to pick it up and take a look at what was going on. Being in San Diego we have a few small events but this is one event that’s going to rock San Diego, and Hopefully continue rocking San Diego for years to come.

I caught up with Garry Thayer from North County San Diego on the o0hone last week and had a conversation with him about his little shindig. He’s been putting on shows here in S.D.  for a while now,  one or two a month at about 4-5 different venues spread across the county. This is a much bigger venue he says than most of the other places he works with. He said it needed to be a bigger venue for the number of bands and the car show.

I asked him how many people he expects to show at the Hellbilly Festa nd Car Show, and he said he thinks it’s going to be big, somewhat crazy, maybe even off the hook but to ask him August 1st for the official count. I asked him how much he thought he would make, and said to ask him on August 5th for that number, but as of right now he’s sunk about $6,500 into the event.

Garry says he’s the only person organizing and putting on this show and that next year he’s hiring some people to help him. A pretty big and hectic job organizing something like this but he says he’s happy so far with the possible outcome. Garry’s been watching the Rockabilly scene come and go from San Diego and he has always wanted to see someone bring it or some events back to San Diego, and that person eventually turned out to be him.

For those of you in San Diego that remember it, this Little festival is being held at the old Magnolia Mulvaney’s in Santee. In case you show up and want to thank Garry for his efforts at the show, he looks like this, and the line-up is below.

This Years Hootenanny is going to be a big one. If you haven’t seen the upcoming bands and this years Hootenanny, you need to. First off let me say that Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis are going to be there and lord knows how much longer they are going to be alive.

This is a once in a lifetime event. Though I’ve seen Chuck Berry before, I didn’t have my camera with me. This year I will have camera in hand and press on neck. The 2010 Hootenanny Lineup also boasts many excellent bands that are sure to keep you glued to the stage. See You There!

The Nekromantix

The psychobilly band, Nekromantix, began back in 1989 and was founded by Kim Nekroman in Copenhagen, Denmark. At that time Kim had just left the Royal Danish Navy after being deployed on a submarine for 8 years. After a couple of local danish shows, the band appeared at a big music festival in Hamburg, Germany, just a mere six months after their first rehearsal session. This landed them a record deal and their first album, Hellbound.

At this time the psychobilly scene was dominated by brit bands, and psychobilly fans world-wide welcomed the new and different style of Nekromantix. The music is described as being like “Elvis meets the Wolfman”, add a little punk attitude and spice it up with monster movies lyrics. Kim’s wildness on stage and his well known coffin bass have proven that likes to have fun with the music.

The Nekromantix released Curse of the Coffin in 1991, after heavy touring in Europe. A low budget video with the same title was shown several times on MTV’s “Alternative Nation”. This album was to become a classic and an influence for many new bands for the following years to come.

A follow-up album titled Brought back to Life, in ‘94, resulted in the only psychobilly band ever being nominated for a Grammy Award, and was followed up by a tour in Japan. Brought back to Life is considered by many as their masterpiece and as a perfect album.

Their fourth album, critically acclaimed and also controversial, Demons are a Girls Best Friend, was released in 1996. At the same time the Nekromantix appeared in the news on Danish national Television, and was followed by several European festival appearances and tours.

Their fifth real album was the long awaited live album, Undead’n'Live, this album includes all of the on stage favorites. In 2001, Kaptain Zorch said, “they obviously care about their music, and go to great pains to reproduce their recorded sound live on stage.”

Return Of The Loving Dead, their sixth album,was produced and released in the USA. This was the band’s first album to be widely distributed in the U.S. and helped make them part of the emerging psychobilly movement on the west coast which was centered around the Hellcat label along with bands such as Tiger Army.

Why the USA ? It’s still a mystery to some, while others have their own idea about it. Maybe a “successful career achievement” parody, or maybe just to not do like the Stray Cats did. Unless, of course, it was just a good deal for them, but who knows ? Even the band doesn’t know!

All their albums have been low budget recordings released on small independent labels, and despite the fact that absolutely no money was spent promoting, the Nekromantix have achieved a world-wide acceptance and have been touring Japan, USA, Great Britain, Germany, Finland, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, France, Spain and Denmark.

In 2004, the Nekromantix are back with their seventh album, Dead Girls Don’t Cry, again produced and released in the USA.

In 2007, their eighth album, Life Is a Grave & I Dig It!, was released. Soon after in 2008 Franc joined as permanent and current guitarist. On January 11, 2009 Andrew Martinez, their then current drummer, was killed in an automobile accident. One month later it was announced that Lux, their now current drummer and the first female member to enter the band, would take his place.

The band’s line-up has changed a few times throughout the years but two things remains the same, Kim Nekroman as the sole constant member and the philosophy is still the same, “have fun and hold nothing sacred.”

The current line-up consists of Nekroman, guitarist Franc, and drummer Lux.

This is a little late in coming but Jim Marshall, the man who photographed Johnny Cash flipping off the camera in San Quentin Prison, has died. The man shot the iconic image in 1969 and said that contrary to popular belief, Johnny Cash had never been in prison.

The shot of Cash isn’t the only iconic image Jim Marshall has shot, he’s been to Woodstock and many other shows. Many artists we she in many of the images of historic bands in media were shot by Jim Marshal. Bands like The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and many more.

Ink-n-Iron 2010 is just around the corner again and this years line-up looks even better than last years music line-up. The list of bands is incredible and looks to be an event not to be missed. This is one year you will want to get the all weekend pass and not miss a single note of music.

Held at the Queen Mary in Long Beach California, Ink-n-Iron has been running now for 6 years now, NOT including the start of it as the Long Beach Tattoo Convention held in 2003. The second one and the start of Ink-n-Iron being held on the Queen Mary in 2004, it’s been a here-to-stay event ever since.

The Ink-n-Iron Pinup Pageant show being held on Sunday at 4:30, last years left a little to be desired and uneventful, but a quick look at this years contestants, it could be a real tight vote. The ladies will hopefully put on a show that will surpass last years. This year the ladies entering the show have great images, and some experience in Modeling and Pinup.

As well there’s another Ink-n-Iron Car Show, and a Fashion Show Sponsored by Stop Staring Clothing.

This years event looks to be one of the better ones of the past few years and will definitely be worth your money.

The Polecats, were a New Wave-ish Rockabilly band formed in 1977 by Tim Worman and Martin “Boz” Boorer when they were still in school, in the North London Area. They were involved in the early 80s UK rockabilly revival, and were one of the more successful bands of the time.

The original line-up being Tim “Tim Polecat” Worman  on vocals, Martin “Boz” Boorer on guitar and vocals, Phil Bloomberg on bass, and Chris Hawkes on drums. 

The band, originally playing under the name of “Cult Heroes,” an earlier name before the name The Polecats, found it hard to book gigs on the rockabilly circuit, because the name sounded “too punk”. Hawkes’ at one time suggested the name The Polecats, and so they changed the name and they started to play shows. The Polecats played rockabilly with a “punk sense of anarchy and helped revive the genre in the early ’80s”. Later as the band moved on Chris Hawkes was replaced by Neil Rooney on drums. For a short time in 1980 they toured and recorded with Robin Scott and were called Scotty Robbins & The Psychobillies.

The band signed to Mercury Records in 1980, and released their most successful LP, Polecats Are Go! was produced by Dave Edmunds. They had chart success in the UK with a cover of David Bowie’s song “John, I’m Only Dancing”, as well as a reworked “Rockabilly Guy” and another cover of the T-Rex song “Jeepster”. They hit the charts in the United States in 1983 with their song “Make a Circuit With Me.” After the successful charting in the US, Neil Rooney was replaced on drums by John Buck.

A 1986 movie named Joey, is about a father and son with a broken relationship. The plot is loosely based about how music helps to bring them back together and features two songs by the polecats. A cheesy movie but worth the watch for the music content.

Boz Boorer left The Polecats to work with Morrissey as a guitarist, musical director, and co-songwriter. In 1989, Boz put together a Polecats reunion and produced a live album and a new studio set. Tim Polecat formed the band 13 Cats after he moved to Los Angeles, California with drummer Slim Jim of the Stray Cats, stand-up bassist Smutty Smith of The Rockats, and guitarist Danny B. Harvey of The Swing Cats.

In November 2006 frontman Jarvis Cocker of the British band Pulp, along with bassist Steve Mackey, released a 2-CD compilation album, The Trip, which features a wide selection of tracks by artists as varied as The Fall, Gene Pitney, The Beach Boys, The Everly Brothers, Dion, Sonny Bono plus The Polecats with their hit “John, I’m Only Dancing”.

Disney Pixar film, WALL E, used The Polecats 1983 hit song, “Make a Circuit With Me” in their television trailers for the film in June 2008.

Currently and musically, Tim continues to work in film as a  composer as well as a solo singer-songwriter.

In a world exclusive Michelle “So cal Bombshell” McGee, makes a public “heartfelt apology” to Sandra Bullock, for her affair with Jesse James.

“I do feel guilty. I feed bad for Sandra,” McGee tells Australian TV show TodayTonight (via Yahoo!) in a new interview. “I’m sorry for your embarrassment. I’m sorry all this is public. I’m sorry for everything.” She said during the interview.

She also says “She knows what Sandra is going through”, and “She must be hurt, devastated, upset, embarrassed. I want to give her a heartfelt apology,” she adds. “I’m sorry for her embarrassment and pain. I do feel really bad about it.”

McGee blames James for claiming he was separated from Bullock when she first hooked up with him. Saying she feels just as Duped as Bullock, because Jesse James was not upfront with her in the beginning.
