Amy Winehouse Dead at 27, Drug Overdose Suspected

Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive behaviors overshadowed a unique musical talent, was discovered dead Saturday in her London residence, authorities said. She was 27.

“Everyone who had been associated with Amy is stunned and devastated. Our thoughts are with her family and friends,” said Chris Goodman, a spokesperson for her publicity representatives. He said her family will probably issue a press release when they’re ready.

The British singer’s record label, Universal, confirmed her death on Saturday.

“We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer,” the statement read. “Our prayers go out to Amy’s family, friends and fans at this difficult time.”

Her father, Mitch Winehouse, himself a musician, had just flown to New York to perform two shows at the Blue Note jazz club, but learned the news upon arrival and immediately flew back to the U.K..

Winehouse shot to fame with the album “Back to Black,” whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop was a global hit. It won five Grammys and made Winehouse – with her black beehive hairdo and old-fashioned sailor tattoos – one of music’s most recognizable stars.

Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday, TMZ.com reports.

Merle Haggard, Country Music Legend

Merle Haggard was born in Bakersfield in 1937, to parents who had just moved there, after their farm burned down in Oklahoma. Living in a converted box car turned home, there was food on the table and a sturdy shelter. A far cry from today’s standards but back then, anything could be called home, if that’s where the heart was.

Merle’s life changed when his father whom he was very close to, died suddenly of a stroke, when Merle was just 9 years old. His mother took to bookkeeping to make ends meet, and often left him with his aunt and uncle to take care of him while she worked. With no real father figure in his life to guide him like his dad, Merle was soon involved in jumping trains and petty crimes, and was the start of a young and rebellious life.

Lefty Frizzell was one of his musical idols and he learned to imitate him, and then eventually Jimmie Rogers, one of Frizzells idols. By age 14 he was making a little money with his music, but it wasn’t enough to keep him out of trouble. Merle was picked up for suspected robbery, and found innocent, but it wasn’t going to be his last stint in prison. Doing time here and there for petty crimes, he found himself in San Quentin by age 20 doing some serious time . He learned to appreciate his freedom, when he didn’t have any.

His musical talent was his way out of a dead end life of crime, and in 1960 joined in the Bakersfield Country Music scene . By ‘64 he had his first hit single and in 1967 he had the attention of Capitol Records with three Top Ten singles, including his first #1, “The Fugitive.”

While he felt he had changed his life around, he found himself heading int he direction his life was in before by singing about his broken past. He didn’t want to sing about being in trouble jail or drinking. He wanted away from that life. He felt that his criminal past might come back to haunt him. He made those feelings clear in his next #1. The song “Branded Man” includes the lines, “When they let me out of prison, I held my head up high/Determined I would rise above the shame/But no matter where I’m living, the black mark follows me/I’m branded with a number on my name.”

He said Johnny Cash was responsible for him opening up and singing about his past. He didn’t want to at first, but it was Cash who said it was OK, it’s owning up to what you’ve done, and talking about it so that the tabloid can’t. From then on, he stopped running from his past incarcerations, and opened a window to the dark life of prisoners and ex-cons with his songs.

A friend of his from prison, Rabbit, predicted he had a good thing going and should follow his musical career. Telling Haggard this also as he told him about an escape plan from prison. He told Haggard he should follow that dream and not escape, as he had a way out. His old friend Rabbit, was executed after his escape plan led to the death of a prison guard. In 1967 Haggard wrote the song “Sing Me Back Home” for Rabbit and it too turned into another #1 hit. “Mama Tried,” was written as an apology of sorts for his religious and hardworking mother, absolving her of blame for his bad behavior.

Merle Haggard’s music has been going on for decades and only thought recently in the late 90’s had a slow down. Merle is still singing and writing music and performing onstage with his permanent backup band and in 2000 saw a comeback with his new music.

On November 9, 2008, it was announced that Haggard had been diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer in May of that year and had undergone surgery on November 3 to have part of his lung removed. Haggard returned home on November 8. Less than two months after his cancer surgery, Haggard played two shows on January 2 and 3, 2009, in Bakersfield at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace and is planning to continue to tour and record.

So. Cal. Hellbilly Fest and Car Show – July 31st

I was at Ink-n-Iron a couple of weeks ago and saw a flier for the first annual So Cal Hellbilly Fest and Car show. I had to pick it up and take a look at what was going on. Being in San Diego we have a few small events but this is one event that’s going to rock San Diego, and Hopefully continue rocking San Diego for years to come.

I caught up with Garry Thayer from North County San Diego on the o0hone last week and had a conversation with him about his little shindig. He’s been putting on shows here in S.D. for a while now, one or two a month at about 4-5 different venues spread across the county. This is a much bigger venue he says than most of the other places he works with. He said it needed to be a bigger venue for the number of bands and the car show.

I asked him how many people he expects to show at the Hellbilly Festa nd Car Show, and he said he thinks it’s going to be big, somewhat crazy, maybe even off the hook but to ask him August 1st for the official count. I asked him how much he thought he would make, and said to ask him on August 5th for that number, but as of right now he’s sunk about $6,500 into the event.

Garry says he’s the only person organizing and putting on this show and that next year he’s hiring some people to help him. A pretty big and hectic job organizing something like this but he says he’s happy so far with the possible outcome. Garry’s been watching the Rockabilly scene come and go from San Diego and he has always wanted to see someone bring it or some events back to San Diego, and that person eventually turned out to be him.

The Hootenanny 2010 Lineup

This Years Hootenanny is going to be a big one. If you haven’t seen the upcoming bands and this years Hootenanny, you need to. First off let me say that Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis are going to be there and lord knows how much longer they are going to be alive.

The Nekromantix

The psychobilly band, Nekromantix, began back in 1989 and was founded by Kim Nekroman in Copenhagen, Denmark. At that time Kim had just left the Royal Danish Navy after being deployed on a submarine for 8 years. After a couple of local danish shows, the band appeared at a big music festival in Hamburg, Germany, just a mere six months after their first rehearsal session. This landed them a record deal and their first album, Hellbound.

At this time the psychobilly scene was dominated by brit bands, and psychobilly fans world-wide welcomed the new and different style of Nekromantix. The music is described as being like “Elvis meets the Wolfman”, add a little punk attitude and spice it up with monster movies lyrics. Kim’s wildness on stage and his well known coffin bass have proven that likes to have fun with the music.

The Nekromantix released Curse of the Coffin in 1991, after heavy touring in Europe. A low budget video with the same title was shown several times on MTV’s “Alternative Nation”. This album was to become a classic and an influence for many new bands for the following years to come.

A follow-up album titled Brought back to Life, in ‘94, resulted in the only psychobilly band ever being nominated for a Grammy Award, and was followed up by a tour in Japan. Brought back to Life is considered by many as their masterpiece and as a perfect album.

Their fourth album, critically acclaimed and also controversial, Demons are a Girls Best Friend, was released in 1996. At the same time the Nekromantix appeared in the news on Danish national Television, and was followed by several European festival appearances and tours.

Their fifth real album was the long awaited live album, Undead’n'Live, this album includes all of the on stage favorites. In 2001, Kaptain Zorch said, “they obviously care about their music, and go to great pains to reproduce their recorded sound live on stage.”

Return Of The Loving Dead, their sixth album,was produced and released in the USA. This was the band’s first album to be widely distributed in the U.S. and helped make them part of the emerging psychobilly movement on the west coast which was centered around the Hellcat label along with bands such as Tiger Army.

Why the USA ? It’s still a mystery to some, while others have their own idea about it. Maybe a “successful career achievement” parody, or maybe just to not do like the Stray Cats did. Unless, of course, it was just a good deal for them, but who knows ? Even the band doesn’t know!

All their albums have been low budget recordings released on small independent labels, and despite the fact that absolutely no money was spent promoting, the Nekromantix have achieved a world-wide acceptance and have been touring Japan, USA, Great Britain, Germany, Finland, Holland, Belgium, Sweden, France, Spain and Denmark.

In 2004, the Nekromantix are back with their seventh album, Dead Girls Don’t Cry, again produced and released in the USA.

In 2007, their eighth album, Life Is a Grave & I Dig It!, was released. Soon after in 2008 Franc joined as permanent and current guitarist. On January 11, 2009 Andrew Martinez, their then current drummer, was killed in an automobile accident. One month later it was announced that Lux, their now current drummer and the first female member to enter the band, would take his place.

The band’s line-up has changed a few times throughout the years but two things remains the same, Kim Nekroman as the sole constant member and the philosophy is still the same, “have fun and hold nothing sacred.”

The current line-up consists of Nekroman, guitarist Franc, and drummer Lux.

Ink-n-Iron 2010 Band Line-up, Tattoo Festival, Car Show and Pinup Pageant

Ink-n-Iron 2010 is just around the corner again and this years line-up looks even better than last years music line-up. The list of bands is incredible and looks to be an event not to be missed. This is one year you will want to get the all weekend pass and not miss a single note of music.

Held at the Queen Mary in Long Beach California, Ink-n-Iron has been running now for 6 years now, NOT including the start of it as the Long Beach Tattoo Convention held in 2003. The second one and the start of Ink-n-Iron being held on the Queen Mary in 2004, it’s been a here-to-stay event ever since.

The Ink-n-Iron Pinup Pageant show being held on Sunday at 4:30, last years left a little to be desired and uneventful, but a quick look at this years contestants, it could be a real tight vote. The ladies will hopefully put on a show that will surpass last years. This year the ladies entering the show have great images, and some experience in Modeling and Pinup.

As well there’s another Ink-n-Iron Car Show, and a Fashion Show Sponsored by Stop Staring Clothing.

This years event looks to be one of the better ones of the past few years and will definitely be worth your money.
