Rolls
Hair rolls are what most people think of when they think of vintage 1940s hair-dos. If you have at least shoulder length hair, you can do rolls! Give it a shot – it takes a bit of time to dry your hair once it’s in curlers, so leave yourself plenty of time between starting your hair and walking out the door, or invest in a bonnet dryer from a beauty supply store or thrift shop.

Rockabilly, Pinup and Burlesque Hairstyles to Fit YOUR Face

A facial guide to choosing the right Rockabilly, Pinup or Burlesque Hair Style for your face.

The woman who is fortunately blessed with an oval face can wear any style with ease and flattery. But her less fortunate sisters who happen to have a long, thin face or a short, full face have a much more difficult problem on their hands.

The girl with a long face usually finds one style which is becoming and sticks to it because it does so much more for her than any other style she has ever worn. But being a woman, even a flattering style becomes boring after awhile, and she will long to wear a pompadour or a pompadour band or something new and different.

It is possible for the girl with the long face to wear a pompadour and have it flattering just so long as it is styled for her facial contour. It wouldn’t be the same pompadour that I would work out for her full-faced sister, but one that must out of necessity be individually styled.

1. The Pompadour for long, thin face

The style designed for the long thin face, the hair is brought out at the sides to give the illusion of width. The pompadour is higher on the sides, dipping down in a diagonal wave in the center. The back of the hair is dressed in a full chignon(pronounced “sheen-yon,”) which hides a long neck and gives flattering fullness to the lower part of the face.

The hair is swept up close to the head on either side. The height of the pompadour is concentraded in the center – tapering off on either side. The back hair is cut short, and combed into casual curls that are placed well up on the neck. These curls should bluster close to the head behind the ears to give a soft profile line, but should not show from the front, as a general rule, because with the full face additional width at the jaw line is not desirable.

The feather cut.

Sketches 5 and 6 show two versions of the feather cut.
In each case the style for the long face gives fullness at the sides and at the neckline, while the style for the full face emphasizes height and as little fullness at the sides as possible.

7. Flat-top for long, thin face

The newest(in the 1940s-50s) trend in hairstyles is the flat-top. Sketch 7 shows a flattering version of this style for the long, thin face. The hair is combed smooth across the top and the sides are combed out in vertical waves that stand away from the head to give the desired fullness.

Bettie Page, Unplugged and Undressed…

In 1940, Hume-Fogg High School voted a young girl as “most likely to succeed”. Little did they know that success was just an understatement for how far this girl actually went. Some know her as “The Queen of Curves” and some know her as “The Dark Angel”  but everyone would agree that she went down in history as the forever famous  Bettie Page.

Born in Nashville, Tennessee on April 22, 1923, Page became incredibly  independent at an early age. She was an older sister who took the role of a parent figure at age ten when her her father, Walter Page was imprisoned and her mother, Edna Pirtle worked full time as a hairdresser by day and laundry washer by night.

As a teenager, Page and her sisters taught themselves how to sew and started experimenting with make up and different hairstyles inspired by their favorite movie stars. This was the beginning to a life long career in a world based on materialism and appearance. Page journeyed into this lifestyle with hopes to become a famous movie star but came out with years of credit under her belt for pin up modeling and other sexually explicit forms of media. But none the less, she gained the title of an iconic American figure.

Photos of Page’s jet black curls and mid length bangs flooded New York’s erotic photography scene and were printed throughout various men’s magazines. Her coke bottle figure mixed with her fearless posing propped her up on a pedestal in no time. Her modeling was in high demand and even landed her quite a few film jobs. She was known for her specialized photos for select clientele of photographer Irving Klaw, where she performed acts of bondage, sadomasochism and fetishes for film and stills.

Shortly after, Page posed for Bunny Yeagar and together they created her most celebrated work; Jungle Bettie. This took place at Africa USA in Florida, as Page wore her own leopard print designs and went to work with two cheetahs by her side.

Yeager passed these photos on to Hugh Hefner who automatically fell in love with her and stated “I think that she was a remarkable lady, an iconic figure in the pop culture who influenced sexuality, taste in fashion, someone who had a tremendous impact on our society”. He then awarded her playmate of the month and made her the centerfold for his January 1995 issue of Playboy Magazine.

Page continued modeling until 1957 but then converted to Christianity and no longer wanted anything to do with that lifestyle anymore. After that, her life was a roller coaster of emotions and post traumatic disorders that lead her to her death on December 11th, 2008. But throughout the time that she was no where to be found, her legacy still lived on and gained cult followings that still survive today.

Rockabilly Hairstyling Tips for Women

If you’re the girl who runs with scissors or the girl that keeps them in her toolbox, here are some Rockabilly hairstyling tips for you. The brave and bold will go the extreme with their locks, but the more conservative and cautious will go with the imitation. Whatever you choose, these tips will give you that glamourous look that you desire. Just follow these steps and be prepared to have the boys whistling. Then tell them that they better watch out because you might be the next pin-up girl posing for the cover of Cosmo Magazine. But like any good beautician would say, lets start at the very beginning. So here we go, pick your category, get out your shopping list and pen and jot these babies down. Feel free to mix the two if your weary on which personality suits you best. Once you’ve got these, then go to your local pharmacy and get to work.

The Extremest,  The Cautious

1. Scissors,  1. Bobbie Pins
2. Narrow Tooth Comb,  2. Long rolling pin
3. Curling Iron, 3. Curling Iron
4. Hair Spray,  4. Hairspray

Okay girls, so the key here is volume. It is best to start off with freshly washed hair so your locks don’t look weighed down or flat. No matter which side you are choosing, or lingering  between the two, you are going to have the same outcome. These helpful hints are simple, fun and effective. So lay your new purchases out, sit in your beauty chair, stare into that vanity mirror and lets get to work.

Alright Miss Extremist, we will start with your locks first. You are going to want your hair to be dry so either blow dry it or let it dry naturally, whatever works best for you. Next, place your fingers on your temples and draw an imaginary line straight upwards until you reach your hairline. This will mark both ends of where your bangs will be. Now section off your hair by connecting these two points into a center spot about two inches back from your widows peak. Pull this section forward and tie back the rest of your hair to get it out of the way. Now you are ready to cut your Rockabilly bangs. Take your narrow tooth comb and pull it through your locks until its around the center of your nose.  Make sure every bit of hair is pulled to the same length and tension. Now take your scissors and slowly make small snippets all the way across the center of your forehead until all of the excess hair is cut off. You can fix them up if there are any pieces that are to long by simply snipping them with the back the the scissors resting against your forehead. Now you have true Rockabilly bangs.

And for Miss Cautious, heres how we will give you the same effect for your bangs without having to chop them off. Section off your hair the same way as explained above and pull back the rest. Smooth out this section with your fingers and add a spitz of hair spray if your hair is acting rebellious or frizzy. Now, connect the tips of your bangs to the top of the long rolling pin and roll your hair inwards, around the pin, until your reach your roots. Hairspray this section to hold it in place then very carefully and slowly, slide the rolling pin out of one side while keeping your fingers in the whole of your hair to keep the shape. Now take your bobby pins and stick them through the inside and bottom of your new bangs. Finish off with another touch of hairspray and Tad-ah, you have Rockabilly bangs.

Now its time to let your hair loose. This is the more time consuming part but it’s easy to do. Depending on the thickness of your hair, you might want to do this in layers. Pick up a portion of your hair that is compatible with the size of your curling iron. This might be a pinch or a whole chunk, it doesn’t matter as long as it fits. Next, curl this piece all the way to your roots, hold for 3 to 5 sections, then let it go. Continue this with your entire head until every piece is curled. Once this is completed, softly comb your fingers through your hair to separate the curls and give is a more natural effect. This will make your hair fluffy and light. Once you have gotten it to your desirable look, take your hairspray and lock that baby down. Make sure not to overdue it on the spray, as this will make it look stiff and heavy. Now you are ready to go strut your stuff and show off your new look.

Pinup and Rockabilly Makeup Book List

We get a lot of requests for resources for Makeup for Pinup Modeling and just general Rockabilly makeup. So we’ve put together a list of books for just that purpose: Makeup, Eyebrows and Hairstyles. The makeup books by Kevyn Aucoin are a very good resource for several different styles of pinup, rockabilly and Hollywood glamour style makeup. Kevyn explores period pieces from the early days of film(1920’s) to today with clear instructions and makeup pieces. The Bobbi Brown books are a great resources for makeup in general including skin and face care, something I have found as a photographer, to be invaluable. You would be surprised at how many women DO NOT know about skin and face care. Got big pores, you should read this book, black heads, read this book, just need to know how to clean your skin and apply good makeup? READ THESE BOOKS.

Then there is the ALMIGHTY Eyebrow book. Ladies, if you haven’t had formal training in sculping your eyebrows for YOUR face shape, you should get this book right now. Many ladies do their eyebrows the way they THINK they should be done, but they are wrong for their face. Also it teaches how just one or two eyebrow lashes out of place can change the whole look of the face. Check it.

Pinup Models and Pinup Modeling

A pin-up model specializes in provocative poses, however, pin-up photography is not pornography. It features fully-clothed women in playful and suggestive stances. Traditional pin-up art never shows nudity and prefers to leave a lot to the imagination. The women in these photos, often times smiling and friendly-looking, suggesting the “girl-next-door” look, in contrast to the more overtly sexual expression in porn. Pin-up girls are also known as “Cheesecakes.”

History of Pinup Modeling

Pin-up models became popular during the end of the nineteenth century. It was the end of the Victorian age, where women and sexuality were severely repressed. During the twentieth century, especially during the swinging 1920s, western culture began to rebel against Victorian repression and started celebrating sensuality. The first pin-up models were painted or illustrated. During the 1930s and 1940s, photographers started capturing pin-up models on film. These images converted into calendars and posters and were marketed to the masses. Posters were particularly popular with soldiers during war time, who took these posters and calendars with them overseas. The most popular pin up models were Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe and Joan Crawford, to name a few.

Types

In modern times, pin-up models are used in photography. Before photography was a popular medium, pin-up models were often the muse in illustrations. Even after the advent of photography, pin-up models were employed to model for paintings, drawings or other art work. Many people think Betty Boop, a very popular cartoon in the 1930s, was a caricature of various pin-up models during that time.

Features

The most successful pin-up model is one who can balance sexual innuendo with a deliberate innocence. Modern pin-up models are often stylized in a retro-1950s appearance. Hair is polished and reminiscent of the pin curl, or wave look. Makeup is bright, especially featuring red lips and defined eyes with heavy mascara. Clothing is also retro-inspired, in keeping with the WWII era, where fashion dictated tight bodices, pantyhose and high heels.

Misconceptions

Pin-up is not porn. It is also not a fetish. Many aspiring pin-up models are confused on the history of pin-up modeling, and believe that anyone dressed up in a retro style is a pin-up model. A true pin-up photograph leaves more to suggestion than it ever reveals.

Any model looking to get into pin-up or any other niche of modeling must be at least 18-years-old. It is necessary, for the liability of the photographer and the company that purchases the photos. Although pin-up models are fully clothed, it is sexually provocative and vulnerable minors should never be in a position of evoking lust.
