Fiesta de Kustom Kulture in Old Town, San Diego by MotorCult – Sept. 10th

The “Fiesta de Kustom Kulture“, Car and Low-Brow Art Show, is expecting to cause a major jam on the streets of historic Old Town, Saturday, Sept. 10. this FREE TO THE PUBLIC event will be held on San Diego Avenue, Harney Street and Twiggs Street will be lined with hot rods, street rods, customs, muscle cars and trucks of the pre-1972 era as the public rolls through from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All show cars are entered to win trophies and people will cast votes for their favorite ride.

Attendees can also enjoy live entertainment as they soak up the works of world-famous low brow artists and pinstripers right up Artist Alley. A charity auction and raffle will be held among the festivities to benefit Old Town San Diego’s own “Meals-on-Wheels, Greater San Diego” and feature original art items donated by Fiesta de Kustom Kulture artists, collectibles from participating vendors, and certificates from local restaurants, boutiques and businesses.

The Old Town Chamber of Commerce and MotorCult, event producers of Fiesta de Kustom Kulture, anticipate the free show will draw automobile fans from all over the Southwestern United States and hope to make it an annual occurrence for Old Town San Diego. “Between the car show on Saturday and the first-ever Tequila Trail
event on Sunday that will kick off the annual Spirits of Mexico Festival, this week in September is going to be a non-stop party for Old Town,” said Richard Stegner, executive director of Old Town Chamber of Commerce.

The Reno Rockabilly Riot, Reno’s First Ever Rockabilly Event.

“Cruise into Reno Nevada May 13th through the 15th 2011 for The West’s Best Rockabilly Fest™. Hot rods, pinup girls, tattoo artistry, gear and culture vendors, competitions, and of course three days of rockabilly sound. The inaugural RENO ROCKABILLY RIOT 2011, presented by A-Bomb Entertainment, takes place at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, and will feature dozens of bands, more than a hundred tattoo artists, top notch pinstripe artists, Car Shows and as many hot rods as can be squeezed into and around the Grand Sierra.

A-Bomb Entertainment, LLC is proud to present the first annual Reno Rockabilly Riot at the Grand Sierra Resort hotel and Casino in Reno Nevada May 13 – 15, 2011.

This is not your typical car show, it’s a celebration of everything Rockabilly!

There will be rockabilly bands, a hot rodz n’ lead sleds car show (with people’s choice voting), tattoo artists and contests, a “Chop-Off” by the Millers Chop Shop, pinstripers, vendors, clothiers, pin up girl contests, a car corral (to buy your next car project), burn-out contests, drag races, loud pipes contests, great food, fastest mechanics in the west… Plus “The Best in the West” burlesque show featuring: HellzaPoppin Sideshow Review.

A-bomb Entertainment is founded on the principle that a weekend of festivals and fun can be affordable for the whole family. Day passes start at just $10, and children 13 or under are free! Plus, the first 100 kids through the gates on Saturday, accompanied by their parents of course, will receive a FREE die cast car, compliments of Flashback Collectibles!

In addition, A-Bomb Entertainment will also be donating money from this year’s show to the SPCA, as well as the Ranger Joe Mobility Foundation, a charity focused on providing wheel chairs for disabled children.

So. Cal. Hellbilly Fest and Car Show – July 31st

I was at Ink-n-Iron a couple of weeks ago and saw a flier for the first annual So Cal Hellbilly Fest and Car show. I had to pick it up and take a look at what was going on. Being in San Diego we have a few small events but this is one event that’s going to rock San Diego, and Hopefully continue rocking San Diego for years to come.

I caught up with Garry Thayer from North County San Diego on the o0hone last week and had a conversation with him about his little shindig. He’s been putting on shows here in S.D. for a while now, one or two a month at about 4-5 different venues spread across the county. This is a much bigger venue he says than most of the other places he works with. He said it needed to be a bigger venue for the number of bands and the car show.

I asked him how many people he expects to show at the Hellbilly Festa nd Car Show, and he said he thinks it’s going to be big, somewhat crazy, maybe even off the hook but to ask him August 1st for the official count. I asked him how much he thought he would make, and said to ask him on August 5th for that number, but as of right now he’s sunk about $6,500 into the event.

Garry says he’s the only person organizing and putting on this show and that next year he’s hiring some people to help him. A pretty big and hectic job organizing something like this but he says he’s happy so far with the possible outcome. Garry’s been watching the Rockabilly scene come and go from San Diego and he has always wanted to see someone bring it or some events back to San Diego, and that person eventually turned out to be him.

For those of you in San Diego that remember it, this Little festival is being held at the old Magnolia Mulvaney’s in Santee. In case you show up and want to thank Garry for his efforts at the show, he looks like this, and the line-up is below.

Ink-n-Iron 2010 Band Line-up, Tattoo Festival, Car Show and Pinup Pageant

Ink-n-Iron 2010 is just around the corner again and this years line-up looks even better than last years music line-up. The list of bands is incredible and looks to be an event not to be missed. This is one year you will want to get the all weekend pass and not miss a single note of music.

Held at the Queen Mary in Long Beach California, Ink-n-Iron has been running now for 6 years now, NOT including the start of it as the Long Beach Tattoo Convention held in 2003. The second one and the start of Ink-n-Iron being held on the Queen Mary in 2004, it’s been a here-to-stay event ever since.

The Ink-n-Iron Pinup Pageant show being held on Sunday at 4:30, last years left a little to be desired and uneventful, but a quick look at this years contestants, it could be a real tight vote. The ladies will hopefully put on a show that will surpass last years. This year the ladies entering the show have great images, and some experience in Modeling and Pinup.

As well there’s another Ink-n-Iron Car Show, and a Fashion Show Sponsored by Stop Staring Clothing.

This years event looks to be one of the better ones of the past few years and will definitely be worth your money.

A Brief History of Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend

Everyone goes to Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend right? Well maybe not everyone but we all known where the name Viva Las Vegas Came from right? The Elvis Movie, but we don’t all know the History of Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend. I emailed Tom Ingram, The founder and organizer for Viva Las Vegas and asked his a few questions.

Tom Ingram is an actor born in the UK, and moved to the US and having organized weekend music events in the UK decided to do the same here in the US between acting gigs, deciding Las Vegas was the best place for a Rockabilly Weekend Event.

Originally, Viva Las Vegas was a music festival with a car show for the people who attended the music event. The car show was a way for attendees to show off their cars, with the target audience being anyone into 50’s music or 50’s styled cars and hot rods.

Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend has been going now for 13 years, and has been getting bigger and bigger each year, adding extra shows and attractions at the event since it’s beginning, with one major change recently, which was the move to The Orleans Hotel. Tom says average attendance usually on Saturday is about 15,000 people, the first Via Las Vegas had about 2,000 people and Tom says e he will continue with the weekender as long as people come and support it.

I asked Tom what else he does for a living and he said Viva Las Vegas is a full time job. The organization for Viva Las Vegas 14 started 2 months before Viva Las Vegas 13, which took place this past weekend. I asked him what he did is anything for a living, and he told us he owes and manages 36 apartments and does a bit of acting and producing.

So Tom, how much does The Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend Make? “No where near as much as people think”. Is there anything else you would like to add so people can get to know more about Viva Las Vegas? “That could take hours to write. Perhaps one day I will write a book about it.”

The Rise of Tiger Army

Tiger Army

Tiger Army was formed in 1996 by lead singer and guitarist Nick 13. Their debut performance was in Berkeley California, opening for the well-known band AFI. Adam Carson, AFI’s drummer, sat in with the Tiger Army band that night and became a part of an unforgettable performance. The band continued to play at local gigs and recorded a demo which later became the album known as the Early Years.

They were quickly recognized by the co-founder of Hellcat Records; Tim Armstrong, and offered a recording contract. By this time, Nick 13 did not have a set lineup for Tiger Army, but Armstrong had faith in him and signed him anyways. Armstrong set Nick 13 up with a studio line up and gave him the title of their sole songwriter. Tiger Army recorded and released their self-titled album in 1999, and in doing so brought the Psychobilly scene, up from the underground, into more of a main stream view, here in the US.

In 2001, Tiger Army recorded their second album, titled Power of Moonlite. This pushed Nick 13 into moving to Los Angeles to search for new band members to tour with and continue on his journey to stardom. The new group consisted of Nick 13, Geoff Kresge and Fred Hell. Kresge played stand up bass and Hell played the drums. Together they toured around the United States several times and even made their way over to Europe and Japan. They performed at various festivals and headlined many concerts.

The release of Tiger Army’s third album, Ghost Tigers Rise, came about in 2003. This year became a roller coaster ride for the band which involved tragedy and recovering. Fred Hell was shot in a home-invasion. It took him months to heal, but he never fully recuperated. Luckily, a close friend of the band and talented drummer, Mike Fasano, replaced Hell and brought the band back from their misery. A year later, Hell was back in action and Tiger Army performed with the 2004 Warped Tour. With still lingering health issues, even after a miraculous recovery, Hell was unable to continue with the band. Hell had to leave the band and Geoff Kresge, stand-up bass player since the second album, announced his end when they returned home from the Warped Tour.

Nick 13 had nothing else to do but pickup the pieces and move on. Enter the current lineup of Jeff Roffredo, stand-up bass and James Meza on drums. This new line-up is said to be the best so far and have a chemistry like no other. Things really started to pick up when they headed off for their first United States headlining tour at the end of 2004. This tour was known as the Dark Romance Tour and it created a following with their fans not only in America but also various cities around the world. They sold out numerous performances, with their most accredited one being at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. Through all their struggle, Tiger Army managed to climb to the top and are still going strong today.
