Top 10 Rockabilly Shoes and Pumps for Women.

Ok Ladies, you know this site is run by a Male Photographer named Darkman, and a half way decent photographer should know a bit about makeup, hairstyling and wardrobe for his models, even if he’s a guy. Well while I was thinking about what to post, I was looking at shoes for a model I am going to be shooting, and thought I would post the top picks I would like to see a lady in.

So here are my top 10 picks for Rockabilly Shoes and Pumps for Women. These are shoes I would like to see on a model for a photoshoot or even just on the street. Classic, some with a modern twist, but sexy and stylish.  These shoes accentuate a woman’s legs and help give a nice shape to the calf.

Most of the shoes shown are under $20, some are in the $30+ price range but for the most part most are pretty affordable.

One day in 1995, Paul Frank, an American cartoonist, artist and fashion designer, used some spare orange vinyl to create a wallet. It sparked such interest that Paul soon found himself spending every spare moment sewing vinyl — attaching patches to garments, decorating backpacks, and designing custom guitar straps for cohorts in the Orange County music scene.

Frank has also collaborated with many bands including Bad Religion, Every Time I Die, Radiohead, The Vandals, Alkaline Trio, Atreyu, Tool, Gorilla Biscuits, The Aquabats, and Pretty Girls Make Graves. Other musical collaborations include the Coachella festival, Lollapalooza, and Los Angeles radio station KROQ.

Paul’s creations have adorned clothing, accessories, and other products. Julius the Monkey is probably Frank’s best-known character and appears in a wide variety of media and collections. Other characters he has made are Worry Bear, a bear; Spicoli, a hamster; Ellie, an elephant; and Clancy, a small giraffe.

One day Paul made Ryan Heuser, a local fan of Paul’s music, a wallet. The two had previously met each other in passing, but Heuser was taken aback by Paul’s gift and a friendship was formed between the two, and Paul Frank Industries (Paul Frank clothing, Paul Frank accessories and Paul Frank watches) was realized. Paul Frank Industries is currently housed in Costa Mesa, California.

Paul Frank became a worldwide success, led by bright colors, vinyl fabric, and unique characteristics. The company has a cult-like following that love to wear Paul Frank clothing, accessories and Paul Frank wrist watches.

The old adage of keep your friends close but your enemies closer, sorta has a bit new meaning now. What say you?

Late one night at club Music Box in San Francisco, a g-string was flung into the balcony by a fishing rod. This unusual act was the ending to an Ivan Fehnova production known as The Flying G and the beginning to a great strand of creative shows. But these obscene and scandalous productions would not be so successful without the star of the show and that star was no what else but Lili St. Cyr.

Putting on shows that put the crowd in awe became her trademark. She was a blonde beauty with long legs and was at the top of the burlesque world. In the 1940’s and 1950’s, she was titled the most famous woman in montreal, but got into some trouble due to the catholic clergy in Quebec. She was arrested and charged for her immorality, but that didn’t stop her. Lili St. Cyr knew that no matter what happens, the show must go on.

Lili St. Cyr was born in 1918 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, into a family with three sisters, two of them already in show business. Her career began at a very young age, when her grandparents put her in ballet lessons. As she grew up, she kept at it and eventually landed herself a job as a chorus line girl in Hollywood. She had a persistent and dedicated attitude and got her manager to let her perform a solo act. She choreographed the piece on her own and got herself discovered.

She was then brought into San Francisco to perform at a well known club called Music Box. This became her first nude act, which she agreed to do because she knew it would make her the most money. From this, she spread out to a variety of different venues, performing in a number of memorable productions. Along with dancing, she participated in pin-up modeling and acting for the few lead roles that she landed.

After Lili St. Cyr retired, she started up her own lingerie business called Undie World of Lili St. Cyr. She used hand selected fabrics and sold her pieces through catalogs. The catalogs included photos or drawings of herself wearing her lingerie lines with detailed descriptions of each of the pieces and what they were for.

With the advantage of being an icon and having experience in wearing little clothing on and off stage, she really knew what she was doing with this business. She marketed the pieces by saying that they were good for the street, on stage and in front of the camera; all of which she had partaken in throughout her life. She continued with this business until she grew old and eventually past away in 1999. Her legacy lived on and her influences continue to spread throughout upcoming Hollywood stars.

Where to buy Rockabilly Clothing for Women.

While perusing Amazon.com for Cd’s to review and books on rockabilly history, I noticed there’s an aweful lot of REALLY NICE Rockabilly Dresses and Clothing for Women there. I am serious, I got totally distracted and sidetracked by the dresses they have there.

Women have it nice when it comes to clothing, I am serious, I know they go through alot to get all gussied up and all, but man I tell you there’s some pretty spiffy dresses on there for sale.

So I decided I would dedicate this post to the ladies looking for cool stuff to wear.

Pinup Models and Pinup Modeling

A pin-up model specializes in provocative poses, however, pin-up photography is not pornography. It features fully-clothed women in playful and suggestive stances. Traditional pin-up art never shows nudity and prefers to leave a lot to the imagination. The women in these photos, often times smiling and friendly-looking, suggesting the “girl-next-door” look, in contrast to the more overtly sexual expression in porn. Pin-up girls are also known as “Cheesecakes.”

History of Pinup Modeling

Pin-up models became popular during the end of the nineteenth century. It was the end of the Victorian age, where women and sexuality were severely repressed. During the twentieth century, especially during the swinging 1920s, western culture began to rebel against Victorian repression and started celebrating sensuality. The first pin-up models were painted or illustrated. During the 1930s and 1940s, photographers started capturing pin-up models on film. These images converted into calendars and posters and were marketed to the masses. Posters were particularly popular with soldiers during war time, who took these posters and calendars with them overseas. The most popular pin up models were Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe and Joan Crawford, to name a few.

Types

In modern times, pin-up models are used in photography. Before photography was a popular medium, pin-up models were often the muse in illustrations. Even after the advent of photography, pin-up models were employed to model for paintings, drawings or other art work. Many people think Betty Boop, a very popular cartoon in the 1930s, was a caricature of various pin-up models during that time.

Features

The most successful pin-up model is one who can balance sexual innuendo with a deliberate innocence. Modern pin-up models are often stylized in a retro-1950s appearance. Hair is polished and reminiscent of the pin curl, or wave look. Makeup is bright, especially featuring red lips and defined eyes with heavy mascara. Clothing is also retro-inspired, in keeping with the WWII era, where fashion dictated tight bodices, pantyhose and high heels.

Misconceptions

Pin-up is not porn. It is also not a fetish. Many aspiring pin-up models are confused on the history of pin-up modeling, and believe that anyone dressed up in a retro style is a pin-up model. A true pin-up photograph leaves more to suggestion than it ever reveals.

Any model looking to get into pin-up or any other niche of modeling must be at least 18-years-old. It is necessary, for the liability of the photographer and the company that purchases the photos. Although pin-up models are fully clothed, it is sexually provocative and vulnerable minors should never be in a position of evoking lust.

Rockabilly Clothes and Rockabilly Style Music!

Rockabilly style comes from a combination of an era, a feeling, the music, and some sense of magic.  This is not the golden oldies.   This is a forgotten era of music that has not been recorded, and so this rockabilly fashion is a trend that is growing like crazy right now.  Rockabilly clothes, in a sense, come from the mid-1950s era but has been blended quite a bit with today’s edgy look, creating a whole new style.  This style is on the cutting edge of fashion and retro blended.  This style takes the classic elements of fashion and blends it with today’s hottest new trends to create rockabilly fashion.

Beginning with rockabilly clothes requires beginning with the 1950s style trends.  Everything from clothing to hair, makeup to shoes, all of these things will be considered when you are looking to create the rockabilly style. There are a lot of “retro” items that will be useful if you’re looking to achieve this look.  Take a look at the popular hobbies of the 1950s, such as bowling, working on cars, and model rockets.  The type of clothing or other symbolic representations of these hobbies can be a great way to make rockabilly fashion work.  You can find some of these retro items by going to your local thrift shop!

The hair and makeup required to go along with rockabilly clothes for rockabilly style to look its best is also placed in a 1950s setting.  The era was beautifully placed and styled hair, simple, yet bold makeup.  Rockabilly clothing accented with the properly done hair and makeup puts rockabilly fashion together perfectly.  For the ladies, heavy eyeliner, with strongly defined eye shadow and overall eye makeup was the main trick.  Keeping the makeup looking otherwise very natural is key.  This look is impossible to deny when done just right.

Rockabilly clothes for ladies involved dresses the majority of the time.  Consider yourself among the classic Hollywood female icons when you are picking out a dress for rockabilly clothing!  You can rock out this rockabilly style if you go into your vintage or thrift shops and really look for the right shape.  They were form fitting, flattering, simple, and lovely.  The whole look really comes together when you have your hair, makeup, and clothing all in place, minus the makeup of course if you are a guy!  You can be a rockabilly fashion icon with just a few simple and classic looks!

Rockabilly Do’s on the Runway

Malandrino’s 2009 Spring Summer and Fall Winter lines captured the romance of Manhattan and the elegance of Paris.

The models for the Spring Summer line were sassy and confident with a seriously sexy look in their eyes. The designs were edgy pinks, creams, and golds with intricate detailing. In the Fall Winter line, the models carried a solemn attitude down the runway to match the clothes’ quieter colors; blacks, grays, navys with the occasional pink. Although both lines could speak for themselves, what really put the spice back into the whole show were the model’s hairdos. The hair stylists created a rockabilly inspired look to really add that cherry on top.

Elle Magazine featured Malandrino’s 2009 designs along with photographs from the fashion show. The extravagant rockabilly hairdo’s laid on the heads of models from a wide variety of ethnicities. Although in the 40’s, the rockabilly hairdo’s were most commonly shown on Caucasian ethnicities like Lucile Ball, the modernized version of it looks just as terrific on any skin color. When Lucile Ball wore this hair style in her stunning red locks, it gave her a clean and polished look while flattering her graceful feminine features. When the Malandrino models had their hair done like this, they had all the same qualities as Ball but with a little bit more of a modern edge.

Some could call this rockabilly inspired hairstyle a classier couture Mohawk. When Lucile Ball’s hair was done up, she would curl the bang area of her hair outwards all the way until it touched her forehead. She then would pin it in a U-shape with the bottom of the U laying on her hairline and the rest of it traveling up the crown of her head. This would

create a frame for the other separated curls that filled in the center of the U. The left over hair on the sides would then be slicked back and pinned to combined with the hair in the back of the head that was still left hanging. Ball would then curl those locks and pin them up to show of her lovely neck and fabulous earrings

The Malandrino models reinvented this look by giving it their own flare to emphasize the one of a kind style that they were dressed in. The rockabilly hairstyle looks chic and accentuates the models shimmery cheek bones. Similar to Lucile Ball’s, the hairstyle was created by taking the hair and rolling it up until it can not roll anymore. Instead of the U-shape being created on top of the head, these models hair were curled up from the side of the head so the center of the curl faces the front. This almost looks like a cinnamon bun is standing sideways on the girls’ hairlines. The sides are still slicked back, staying true to the original do, and the back is pinned up as well. Lucile Ball would be proud to know that her rockabilly do has been passed down to the next generation and strutted down Malandrino’s runway.

Who wears short shorts?

Shorts of the 40's

The rockabilly shorts are a signature staple of the 1940’s pin up girls. We recognize these on the hottest celebrities and models posing for coke ads over harbor bridges, or something of that sort. The shorts spread from a wide variety of fabrics, but never failed to hold the same design and structure. These, most commonly jean, white, or plaid bottoms, were high wasted and quite short in length. They accentuated the ideal female figure of that time by forming tight to the body and showing off the women’s sexy curves and long legs. The men would go wild over these woman and the rockabilly shorts could definitely take the credit for that.

Nowadays, not only do rockabilly style followers adore these shorts but we can also see popular Fashion Designers grabbing inspiration from these 40’s pin ups girls and making them their own. Rockabilly shorts gain raves on the runway and constantly show themselves in modern reality TV shows. Sequined fabrics and extravagant colored patterns are now used for the shorts to update the style for a more appealing and funky effect. Fashion is a repetitive pattern, where we recreate styles from past decades, but we continue to add our own flare and let the designs evolve.

There were a few concerns with the 1940’s rockabilly shorts when they were brought back to life over the past few years. Women complained that the high waisted style with long pockets made their bottoms look flat and “mom-like”.  With all the video girls and celebrities with curvy bottoms, this puts a lot of pressure on females to strut their stuff and

make sure that every outfit compliments their figure. Fashion Designers recognized this and solved the problem by making hip height pockets. This allowed for the shorts to keep that 1940’s look, but also giving the effect of a rounded, more voluptuous bottom.

Girls can wear these 21st century rockabilly shorts with heels or boots and add anything on top from a flowing blouse to a tight fitted tank top and a blazer. They can be dressed up or played down, regardless of the pattern, fabric, or style. The shorts celebrate the fabulous female figure and allow women of all shapes and sizes to feel and look sexy in them. Although some pairs of the more couture rockabilly shorts can be pretty expensive, there are still plenty of retail stores that sell them for a reasonable price. And if all else fails, you can always sneak into your mothers closet, take her old pair of high waisted pants, grab a pair of scissors and get to work. After all, rockabilly style is all about fun and creativity.

Rockabilly Makeup, Hair, Wardrobe Tips

Hello Dollface…

Rockabilly makeup is very bold and clean…The trick is to make your makeup look minimal.

The Eyes:

Very defined, dark, semi-thick eye brows, arch varies on your face shape.

For eyeshadow , I recommend sticking to nudes and pale pinks.

Feel free to pack on the black eyeliner, particularly to the top and wing it out…you may add a little on the bottom just enough to make your eye color pop.

Big and flirty eyelashes…Don’t be afraid to use falsies, especially on the outer corners…dab the bottom lashes with mascara.

*But please don’t do the super duper shadowy-colors…this drives me nuts. (Save those deep shadows  and pencil thin eyebrows for the 1920s & 1930s glam look…trust me.)

Lips:

Bright reds and pinks. Sometimes suttle is good when you just want that little innocent-popsicle-stained pout…(I personally am a fan of blue-toned reds and pinks than the ones with orange hues.)

Cheeks:

Bright and rosie and sun kissed…apply cheek color to apples and be careful not to get carried away with contouring.

Going to wash that man right out of my hair…or girl…

Hair Tips and Tricks Hair/Makeup/Wardrobe - M. Verdugo Photo - Red Carpet Studios

Well not really. Especially if you are doing an intricate style, you want to keep your hair dirty. The dirtier your hair, the better it holds.

Tools needed for victory rolls:

• Dirty hair!
• Hairspray, a setting cream or lotion (Thermasilk works great), an aerosol hairspray lots of bobbypins, a brush and a pick. (hair stuffer if your hair type needs the height and volume and curling iron if you are in a hurry).

Victory rolls can take some practice, but you basically curl hair, brush it out, backcomb, and roll it and pin it. (for more detailed tips…feel free to email me.)

Taking the easy way out…sometimes looks better. You don’t have to wear victory rolls to be a rockabilly gal…sometimes simple makes more of a statement.

• Bandanas are great statement pieces and terrific for bad hair days…tie it up like a headband, with a knot on top. Or pile your hair on your head and wrap it up like a diaper Rosie the Riveter style.
• A flower in your hair. Part your hair to one side and leave some soft loose curls in. Tuck your hair behind your ear on the side with less hair and pin a gardenia, rose or something similar.

• Pageboy and school girl bangs. Curl your hair and brush it out and under with a round brush. If you already have school girl bangs, you are one step ahead…If not, you can create some mock-bangs with some bobby pins.
• Pony tails!
• Now if you have short hair, you can slick the sides and do a little pompadour…pomade and putty work swell.

“You have a body like a coke bottle…”

These classics will get you by.

• Jeans, (Levi’s are always the best way to go…) You can pull off a very girly-school girl look, a masculine-tomboy look, or a rebel look with jeans.  Big cuffs, whether you do a flood pant/pedal-pusher style or a long pant style…Cuff ‘em daddy!
• Shorts, high waisted and basic…lengths can be tricky…but a good girl length is just barely above the knee (with a slight cuff if they are denim.) Shorter shorts are a little bit racier (obviously) and more of a beach look.
• Both jeans and shirts can go great with cardigans….plain white tees, tanks “wife-beaters”, classic button up shirts you can tie up in a knot to show off your tummy. Or if you want to keep warm or are more of a tomboy or rebel, throw on a flannel.
• Full circle skirts are usually more for the goody-goody type…
• And form-fitting dresses will definitely have you turning heads…
• Leather motorcycle jacket (faux is fine of course!)

Shoes

• Saddle shoes
• Peep toe high heels
• Converse high tops in black (chucks)
• Basic black flats
• Basic white tennis shoes (similar to classic Keds)
• Cowboy boots

Especially for photoshoots, it is always a great idea to keep your stylist at hand when possible.  Stylist are able to keep an eye on things that you (the model) or the photographer may not catch…hair out of place, wardrobe malfunction, the list goes on.
